How to Upload a Profile Picture Without It Getting Cropped
Ever uploaded a profile photo only to have your face cropped or the image go blurry? Matching the size the app wants ahead of time fixes it.
A profile photo usually crops oddly or looks blurry because the ratio and size don’t match what the app expects. Most apps display profiles as a square, so a tall photo gets cut off top and bottom. Sizing it first makes the problem disappear.
Recommended profile sizes by app
- Chat apps: a square of 640×640px or larger stays crisp.
- Instagram: it displays at 320×320px, but upload a 1080×1080px original so it stays sharp when enlarged.
- Forums and work intranets: a square, or 400–800px wide, is usually plenty.
Match the size in your browser
In the image resizer, set the width to the pixels you want (say 1080px) and the ratio is kept intact. Files aren’t uploaded to a server — everything runs in your browser.

To avoid cropping your face
Since the app shows a square, cropping the photo roughly square before uploading minimizes cutoff. Use your phone’s Photos “Edit → Crop” at a 1:1 ratio, then just set the size with the tool above.
If it’s too large to upload

If it’s an iPhone HEIC photo
If the photo is an iPhone HEIC, some apps won’t recognize it. Convert it first with the HEIC to JPG converter, then use it.

- Does enlarging make it sharper? Scaling above the original size actually blurs it. Staying at or below the original resolution looks sharpest.
